Chapter 8
A Cornered Squirrel
BILLY WAS AMAZED THAT THE BIG ASIAN MAN could lift all that hay with just his head. The veins in the man's thick neck bulged as he slowly lifted the floorboard higher.
The whole time he kept looking at Billy and smiling. "You're mine now, little squirrel. Quit making Chan work so hard. We don't have time for foolishness."
Billy didn't wait to reply. He turned and quickly began climbing over the pile of hay that was five or six bales high. While high in the air, on top of the pile of hay, he saw a large square hole of light in the wall of the loft. Billy crawled across the haystack to the light. Behind him, he heard the bales of hay falling as Chan climbed up into the loft.
Billy climbed down the hay bales in front of the large square hole in the gable. The floor was clear by the hole. He jumped down off the last bale of hay. He stuck his head out the square hole in the gable.
Billy looked down sadly. The ground was over twenty feet away, too far to jump. Though he had a big heart for all kinds of adventures, one of the few things he was afraid of was being up too high in the air. He would crawl into dark caves, ride in the back of a garbage truck or even ride his bike down the side of the steepest bluff in town. But if his feet had to leave the ground very far behind, he got nervous.
He looked down at the ground once more. He felt like he was on the high dive at the public swimming pool in Springdale. Most of his friends would go off the high dive with whoops of glee, but not Billy. He had tried several times to go to the end of the diving board. But each time he looked over the edge, he got scared. And the longer he looked down at the water, the farther away it seemed. Once he stood there almost five minutes, peeking over the edge of the board, thinking he would dive but then not diving. The older kids would tease him mercilessly as he walked back to the steps and climbed down. He loved to swim, but the high dive was just too scary.
Then Billy looked up. Above the hole, a five-foot wooden pole stuck out from the gable. At the end of the pole was a large metal pulley. Billy knew there must have been a rope there at one time to help lift the bales of hay up into the loft. But there was no rope that day.
Behind him, he could hear Chan muttering as he climbed over the bales of hay. The big man sounded very angry. Billy looked down once more, hoping somehow that it wouldn't seem so far down. But the ground looked farther away than ever. Billy stared at the wooden pole. He leaned out for a better view.
